Ariana Grande is sparking conversations about her character Glinda in Wicked, hinting there might be more depth to her story than meets the eye.

During an interview with the UK outlet Gay Times, Grande and her co-star Cynthia Erivo were asked about fans who see their characters, Glinda and Elphaba, as a potential romantic pair.

Erivo, who plays Elphaba, shared her thoughts: "I think Elphie goes wherever the wind blows. She loves Glinda and loves love. There’s nothing wrong with celebrating the deep connection they share.” Erivo added that their bond is “true love,” which explains why fans are rooting for the duo.

Grande, who plays the bubbly and popular Glinda, chimed in to agree. “It’s true love, trust, truth, and such a safe space for one another,” she explained. “That’s what all relationships should be, whether romantic or platonic.” She then teased, “Glinda might be a little in the closet. You never know! Give it a little more time.” Grande’s comment left fans buzzing with curiosity about her character’s deeper layers.

A Story Beyond Romance

In Wicked, Glinda and Elphaba’s relationship evolves from adversaries to close friends during their time at Shiz University. While the story includes romantic plots, Glinda trying to win over Prince Fiyero (played by Jonathan Bailey) and Boq (played by Grande’s real-life boyfriend Ethan Slater) pursuing Glinda, the core of the narrative focuses on their powerful and transformative friendship.

In another interview with GLAAD, Erivo reflected on the impact of the story for LGBTQ+ audiences, saying, “You deserve all the good things. Your differences make you special. Your queerness is beautiful. Elphaba knows what it feels like to be different and alone, but that doesn’t make you any less amazing.”

Grande added, “Oz has always been a queer place, even in the original L. Frank Baum books.” Their comments highlight how Wicked resonates with audiences who see themselves in its themes of love, acceptance, and embracing uniqueness.

Wicked is set to hit theaters on November 22, and fans eagerly anticipate how these beloved characters will be brought to life with all their complexity and charm.
